As Doctor Dulcamara
in L’Elisir d’Amore
|
I was born in Hollywood, Florida but grew up in the Chicago area. I have a BA in Literature from Wheaton College and a BMus and MMus in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Indiana University (Bloomington campus). I have studied voice with Harriet Meyer (now the wife of Martin Marty, the theologian), Eleanor Lutton (of the Paris Opera) and D. Ralph Appelman. My coach was Carl Fuerstner (who also worked with Jessye Norman, Cesare Valetti, and other prominent artists). At some time or other in my life, I have performed on stage with Pablo Elvira, Carole Farley, Nathan Gunn, Elizabeth Hynes, Martha Lipton, Robert Orth, Nancy Shade, and many excellent but lesser known artists; and have sung under conductors Tibor Kozma, Wolfgang Vacano, Don V Moses, Robert Shaw and others.
I’ve been a member of the South Bend Chamber Singers since 1989 and also perform with Indiana Opera North. I am a member of the VoiceCare Network.
Some of the roles I’ve performed:
I’ve also sung a good bit of the standard oratorio and cantata literature. In the fall of 1996, I was bass soloist in a rare performance of Donizetti’s Requiem (in D) and performed Carissimi’s Jephthe; in April 1998, I was one of the featured soloists for a performance of Bach’s St. John Passion with the South Bend Chamber Singers and the Chamber Orchestra of the Rhine. In November of 1998 I was a featured soloist in the "Italian Night" concert with the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra; most recently appeared in concert with the South Bend Symphony performing a Haydn mass and as bass soloist in a performance of Purcell’s ode Come, Ye Sons of Art.
The first clip is the bass aria from J. S. Bach’s Magnificat. It was recorded during a performance at the Moreau Center for the Arts at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana. The work was performed as part of a concert given by the South Bend Chamber Singers under the direction of Nancy Menk in December of 1994.
The second clip is part of the Act 2 duet (Quanto amore) for Dulcamara and Adina in L’elisir d’amore recorded during a performance in 1991. The soprano is Amy Cofield. This was not one of my better evenings. In addition, the recording was done by the house "technician" and so is not very good technically. But I thought it might give you an idea of my performance in the role of Dulcamara (pictured at the top of this page). And yes, it’s in English.
The third selection is from the Donizetti Requiem recorded in a 1996 performance.
