Enrico Caruso (1873-1921)
Titta Ruffo (1877-1953)

Otello by Giuseppe Verdi

Caruso Although Caruso had a big voice and Ruffo had a huge voice, and although they were both highly celebrated singers during the first quarter of the twentieth century, they never appeared in an opera production together. But they did make this recording of the famous duet for Iago and Otello from Verdi’s opera about greatness and jealousy. Some commentators have opined that similar emotions—or a fear the baritone’s powerful voice would overshadow the great tenor—were the reason Ruffo did not appear at the Metropolitan until after Caruso’s death.
